Community Cabinet
No one should go hungry
In late 2025, the federal government shut down for a record 43 days from October 1st to November 12th. During this time, there were numerous reports about the strain on food pantries across the nation. In response, the Clinton County Progressives took action to secure food and other necessities for those in need. We wanted a way for anyone to receive these necessities without feeling shame, so we built a cabinet that was freely accessible, no questions asked, from 9-9 every day of the week.
Even after the shutdown ended, we continued supplying the cabinet with essential items, because it was never just about supporting those affected by the shutdown. Republicans have spent decades disassembling social safety nets and have only amplified their efforts since the Trump administration took office once more. From cuts to SNAP, Medicaid, SUNBucks, a program to help provide schoolchildren in need with food during the summer, and more, Republicans continue to display their disloyalty to everyday Americans and Hoosiers. Their message is clear: Those in need do not deserve help, and they must be shamed for even asking. Our message could not be any further from theirs: No one should go hungry or be shamed for needing help.

We’ve seen the impact of food insecurity in our community first hand. One individual confessed to us that they weren’t sure where their next meal would be coming from. They didn't have anyone in their life to assist them, or a working vehicle that could reliably get them to the grocery store. We asked ourselves, "How many people in Clinton County have similar needs that are going unnoticed?" Another member in our community, recently laid off from a local school, likely due to budget cuts passed by the Republican majority state legislature, was concerned about how they were going to feed their family when they reached out to us for help. Advocacy is crucial in the current political climate, but we also happily step up to help our neighbors when the system fails.
Unfortunately, the Community Cabinet’s doors were blown away amidst the harsh winter conditions. However, that didn’t stop us; We have since pivoted to a delivery system to continue supporting our community. For now, neighbors can feel free to email us or leave us a message or text if they require assistance. We work with them to get items tailored to their needs. In the meantime, we are seeking more reliable ways to bring the Community Cabinet back. Thank you to anyone who has donated their time and/or supplies.
